The Topping's of The Fylde |
This is the history of my father's family the Topping's. I have traced my own family tree and in doing so have tried to build up a history of all the Topping's who lived in the Fylde in the hope that someday I can connect all the branches together. In the process I have learned quite a lot about the history of Blackpool & The Fylde and have expanded my research to trace all branches of my history as far as I can. I have been lucky with my name (from a family history standpoint it's a great relief not to be a Smith) and that the Topping's have been fairly static in the Fylde at least from the mid 1700's. The Topping's have been primarily Joiners and over the years have been intimately connected with the development of Blackpool leaving us with a landmark in the form of Topping Street. My family like many others has a smattering of very interesting characters and where possible I have explored these as fully as possible. These families include Stubbins, Farmer, Gillott and Tupman from Nottingham; Spilling, Leonard and Woolgar families from Southwark and Bermondsey in London; the Cadby's from Devizes in Wiltshire (including the piano manufacturer Charles) and also the Macann's from Ireland. The biggest problem has been with my mother's father George Charles Evans who we believe was adopted. This branch still needs a lot of work. I am still at an early stage of research and would be very happy to hear from anybody with information about any of these families or about the the areas in which they lived. A full list of surnames can be found here or you can use the search facility. Thanks for taking a look, and good luck with your own research.
